PLAN B - GHOSTS

After we had decided to scrap the FOMO idea, we discussed other concepts that we each were drawn towards. Finally, we all agreed on Alice's concept of Ghosts and paranormal activity surrounding Surrey. Our idea was to explore ghost/paranormal communities, whom have experiences that they would like to share with us. We intended on gathering all these different groups/individuals to one location, where e could film their discussion to one another, explaining their separate experiences.

As a group, we thought it would be interesting to begin our documentary with a short skit; Starring myself, Alice and Izzy whom are all amateur ghost hunter's exploring the woods around us. There were a few problems with planning permissions; We were unable to secure Farnham Park as our chosen skit location. However, Alice ha told us of her (ghost) experience in Bordon Inclosure, and luckily we were able to obtain permission to shoot our skit there.

The first day of shooting was not great. It was dark and the rain was inconsistent. We had attempted to film, however due to our lack of planning and practice of the skit, (and it being dark) we agreed to call it a day and film once we were all prepared - An once the weather was better.

Throughout the week of planning, we came across a lot of problems. Everyone we had contacted, from ghost hunter's, ghost/paranormal groups and even an author of a book based around ghost sightings in Bordon Inclosure had either cancelled on us at the last minute, or they never got back to us. Due to this, we were unable to film any interviews. After long debates, as a group we all finally agreed on making our documentary, into a mocumentary - extending the skit that was only meant to appear at the start of the documentary...

From the start of the filming process, I wanted to have a narrative; Showing the journey from one place to another (from one culture to another). We began by shooting in the studio, capturing portrait shots and using lighting to create mood and juxtaposing with the bright and open outdoor shots. Using spotlights in the dark room highlighted the models, capturing their every emotion and facial expressions. I wanted to use these shots as breakaways from the main storyline. Additional breakaway shots of nature; trees, grass, flowers, a river were all intentional as they all have meaning that link to Martin Luther King's speech. In Siddhartha, the river symbolises the journey towards enlightenment. A tree symbolises stability and growth. All these characteristics were to represent the two, (myself and Manon) as they make their journey towards one another. Available Light

The task I was given was to use available light. To make the most out of the light, I decide to take my photos outside. I chose the tractor a the main background of the photos so that I could create a range of poses, as well as liking the way the metal had rusted and was formed with interesting shapes and textures against the subject, creating an interesting distressed look for the majority of the photos. I also experimented with layering of subjects by placing the main subject in the mid-ground rather than foreground. I took advantage of the slightly low lighting by highlighting shadows to appear more extreme and adding to the grungy and industrial appearance of the background. Overall, I am happy with the collection of photos that I've produced, given the fact I'm not very familiar with using DSLR cameras. I also found the photos had a editorial feel to them though how the subject poses and works with the tractors. Original Edited
