Nick Lyons |
Honestly, I had no clue what I wanted to create for our Maps & Networks project. Plus, I wasn't fully confident in creating such a large piece that would be displayed in galleries. Don't get me wrong, I have done this before - But that was back when I was doing Graphics or fine art. Something I had a knowledge and understanding of the subject. I was really happy when Dani asked if we could work together. She also wasn't fully confident and we have both worked well in past projects together.
Dani came up with our initial concept. "The representation of people's behaviour in society and how they mask that." She said how she definitely wanted photography and a projection, using masks in the photographs or projecting over the masks.
After our first tutorial with Rosie, who gave us good feedback and other potential ideas we could look at, we decided to focus on cultural identity in the individuals we were going to look at. This was fairly easy for the both of us as we had already produced work based on cultural identity.

Dan Winters |
I began my research by looking at artists, Nick Lyons and Dan Winters. The image on the right is a collection of some of my favourite works by Nick Lyons. This gave me a clear visual understanding of what Dani meant by projection onto the face. We thought of projecting a video of us recreating art works from of models culture, then projecting them onto the face which they will be part covering with a simple white mask. I also looked at Dan Winters, (who's photo is on the right) as I thought it was a interesting idea how he used a roll of film on one side of the face, which we could play the video in - so that it doesn't project over the entire face.
Rosie mentioned Chloe Debonnaire, a former UCA student, who projected a video of herself onto old classic portraits. Dani and I really liked this idea and the way it looked. It reminded us of the moving paintings in Harry Potter. We decided that this was how we wanted our work to look, somehow incorporating the masks.
